ESTONIA

žEESTI
ESTONIA             March ´10
Tartu, town with 100 000 inhabitants situated around 180 kilometres from the capital Tallinn.
About  23 000 students study at the higher educational establishments of Tartu and a significant part of Estonian researchers and academics work here.

Tartu Prison is a fairly new prison founded in 2000 and at the moment it has around 920 inmates.
The education is provided by teachers from Tartu Secondary school for Adults and Tartu Vocational Education Centre. This means that the teachers are employed by the government of Education and has part of their duty at the prison and, not as is the case in Sweden where they are part of the Department of Justice and are employed by this government and they have their total duty at their prison. Whatever education that is started in prison may be continued outside after release, this seems to be the case in all of our FLAME countries. On Thursday morning we left Tartu for Tallinn, a bus ride of around 2 hours and a half and now we switched from a new prison to an old one.

Murro Prison is situated around 40 kilometres from Tallinn and this prison is more than 70 years old, it was built in 1938 and really run down and about to close in a few years’ time. The Teachers and staff really try to give the best concerning education with the means they have and the surrounding but it can’t be easy.
This is really a Prison in its old meaning with cells for up to 8 people with the toilet inside the cell and no privacy whatsoever
